In November 2006 the Department of Health formally launched the Dignity in Care campaign which identified 10 factors which high quality care services should have in place in order to respect the dignity of service users and encouraged Local Authorities and health economies to drive forward this agenda in their areas. Dignity issues are already being tackled in a number of workstreams across the city, most explicitly in work concerning Standard 4 of the National Service Framework General Hospital Care. In May 2007 Leeds City Council’s Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Board concluded an inquiry into Dignity in Care issues in the city making a number of recommendations for advancing Dignity.
Care Minister Ivan Lewis has praised the Leeds Dignity in Care campaign and the work being carried out by organisations such as Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust to improve Dignity standards.
